Black Sea Survey Area
The Black Sea geological and archaeological survey will be conducted in the northern Black Sea, off the coast of Ukraine. Geologists and archaeologists from the University of Rhode Island (URI) and the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences will use side scan and sub-bottom sonar and ROVs to survey the area for both ancient and modern sites. The region of interest is the ‘Black Sea Survey Area’. The Black Sea is a unique body of water because the water deeper than approximately 150m is anoxic, that is to say, there is little to no oxygen. This condition leads to the preservation of organic material, such as wood. Scientists will study archaeological sites in both the oxic and anoxic water layers to learn how the different environments affect the sites.
