We just did the elevator activity. We have a question about the real elevators. Why do you use steel plates and not something more biodegradable? Can you ever recover the steel plates? Can the animals at the bottom of the ocean use these steel plates?

Thanks for the question! We spoke with Dr. Dwight Coleman from the Institute for Exploration, and he said that the sample elevator ballast is made of low grade iron (not steel) that dissolves away in a few years time.
