Mapping Shipwrecks!

Nautilus Live Overview Print E-mail

Did you know the deep sea holds so many mysteries, scientists call it “inner space”? You are invited to join Dr. Robert Ballard, Dr. Katy Croff Bell, and the rest of the Nautilus Corps of Explorers as they investigate this hidden world aboard the Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus. Over the past several years, Nautilus has already crossed the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, making discoveries all along the way. The science team has mapped the sea floor, studied underwater volcanoes, investigated unusual life forms, and explored ancient shipwrecks. In the years to come, the team will continue to explore uncharted areas of inner space all over the world.

Nautilus has some cool tools for the job. Two “towfishes” called Echo and Diana use sound waves to map the sea floor. When Nautilus scientists spot something interesting, they send down the ship’s state-of-the-art remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) Argus and Hercules. These ROVs take a closer look with high-definition cameras and sensors. Hercules even has mechanical “arms” to collect samples from the ocean bottom. As this is happening, a satellite dish on the ship sends live video and other data around the world. Scientists on shore use the data to take part in the expedition from afar.

On the Nautilus Live website, you can be part of the action, too. You’ll get a close-up look at deep-sea discoveries, from bubbling vents and ancient shipwrecks to strange and beautiful forms of life. Stop by nautiluslive.org any time to check out videos, blogs, and photos from the Nautilus expedition. When Nautilus is at sea, the website streams live video and audio from the ship 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Use the “Send a Question” feature for a chance to have your questions answered live by the Corps of Explorers aboard the ship! At any time of year you can stay right here on the Immersion website to play online games, do puzzles, browse web links, and watch videos related to Immersion’s Nautilus Live multimedia program.

Be prepared for an adventure, and welcome aboard!
